Book Studies

Book Studies will start in September for ten weeks.  They are each $9.99 to cover the cost of materials, plus the cost of the book. Participants can purchase the book on their own if they have specific preferences (no marks, spiral binding, etc.).

Click the link under each study to express your interest and get more information. Filling out an interest form is not a commitment to the study; all people on the interest list will be emailed in August to determine the best time and place for the group. Larger groups will meet at OfficeNOW if desired; however, smaller groups may want to meet at a cafe or the library.

The Soul of Education
by Rachael Kessler

Average Book Price ranges from $6.00-$15.00

American culture has conflated the term "spiritual" with religious, but the need to connect on a higher plane with truths and experiences that transcend the physical is not necessarily tied to religion. In a haste to separate church and state, schools often delete any transcendent experiences from the curriculum.  Europeans spend their gap year between high school and college backpacking on their own, fending for themselves, being responsible for the details of their daily existence, and overcoming unforeseen obstacles. The Amish also have a tradition that merges freedom with responsibility and allows teens to experience a world beyond their upbringing and culture, called Rumspringa. In religious coming-of-age rites, such as bat or bar mitzpahs and Khatam Al Koran, teens are given counseling about life for weeks and memorize passages of sacred books to recite before a solemn ceremony. Other traditions such as Walkabouts, Bullet Ant Initiation, and Inuit Outcamps test the teen's maturity over fear, pain, and sacrifice. The universal American rites of passage are prom and the graduation ceremony, neither of which necessarily push students to the edge of their self-confidence and give them tools to overcome challenges in life.  Kessler pours her experiences as a teacher and counselor to pre-teens and teens into the deeply moving stories and profound questions of students themselves. Each chapter responds to the yearnings young people express: Deep Connection, Meaning and Purpose, Silence, Joy, Creativity, Transcendence, and Initiation--each evokes a gateway to inviting soul into the classroom. Without healthy environments led by knowledgeable adults, young people sometimes seek these gateways through means like drugs, unsafe sex, suicide, hazing, and other self-destructive paths. This practical guide gives examples and resources to help students find constructive ways to these gateways.

Cross-Cultural Connections: Stepping Out and Fitting In Around the World
by Duane Elmer

Average Book Price ranges from $2.00-$15.00

An American missionary that cringes when Santa is placed in the manger instead of baby Jesus during a Christmas play, because the new church leaders exported American culture with Biblical truth. Now the congregation can't tell the difference, and their theology is a mixed bag. An American annoyed with a housekeeper who won't take responsibility for broken dishes, only to discover a cultural factor in the Zulu language that leads to its speakers using passive voice. A woman saying, "My husband died last Tuesday" in her village means that she had a hand in his murder. The terms diversity and cultural awareness are buzzwords that have practical consequences. Besides differences in food and fashion, we face significant contrasts of cultural orientation and patterns of thinking. As we travel across cultures, what should we expect? How do we deal with culture shock? And can we truly connect with those we meet? Experienced cross-cultural specialist Duane Elmer provides a compass for navigating through different cultures. He shows us how to avoid pitfalls and cultural faux pas, as well as how to make the most of opportunities to build cross-cultural relationships. Filled with real-life illustrations and practical exercises, this guide offers the tools needed to reduce apprehension, communicate effectively, and establish genuine trust and acceptance. Above all, Elmer demonstrates how we can avoid being cultural imperialists and instead become authentic ambassadors for Christ. Whether you are embarking on a short-term mission trip or traveling for business or pleasure, this book is both an ideal preparation and a handy companion for your journey. This book is written from a Christian perspective for Christians seeking to understand other cultures.
